Outreach event - Science Festival 2016

Date: From 09/06/2016 to 09/06/2016

Location : Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey

On 9th June, Gökhan Serhat of Koç University, Istanbul; along with Koç University Society of Women Engineers, held a Science Festival to excite 90 high school students about science and engineering.

Students from Emirgan Özdemir Sabancı Anatolian High School and Ali Akkanat Anatolian High School in Sariyer, Istanbul travelled to Koç University for the day and were treated to a range of entertaining activities to expand their horizons. The event particularly wanted to challenge the perception that science and engineering 'is a boy thing' and so most of the students attending were girls.

The event started with the Karel coding in computer labs, which provided the students a fun introduction to software development. Next up was a series of "Science Kit" activities, which covered building boats with solar panels, learning basic logic of simple mechanisms and conducting a simple car assembly by putting gear system and other components together. In addition, students found opportunity to conduct hands-on experiments such as DNA extraction in biology labs.

In the final part of the Festival, the students visited Advanced Materials, Mems, Microfabrication and Clean Room Labs to enjoy seeing several different research areas in action.
